چکیده

The study was undertaken to assess the value of etomidate in modifed E.C.T. and compare the results with thiopentone sodium. Fifty patients of schizophrenia, depressive illness and manic depressive psychosis requiring E.C.T. were studied with thiopentone and etomidate in two subsequent sittings. The results indicate that induction time is approximately same with both the drugs. The shorter recovery time with etomidate in comparison to thiopentone proved to be of definite advantage specially to psychiatric out patients who rapidly have to regain consciousness and soon become alert enough to go back to their homes alter treatment.

A Comparative Study of Althesin and Thiopentone in Modified E.c.t.

The present report compares Thiopentone sodium and Althesin as intravenous anaesthetic agents in modified electro-convulsive therapy. The induction time with althesin and thiopentone was more or less similar. There was significantly shorter recovery period with althesin as compared to thiopentone. Early and uneventful recovery with althesin was distinct advantage over thiopentone sodium.

Serum Potassium Changes with E.c.t.

Serum potassium changes with direct E.C.T. and with modified E.C.T., given under three anaesthetic (thiopentone, diazepam and propanidid) and relaxant (suxamethonium) combinations were studied in 25 patients. Ten patients each, undergoing minor surgical procedures, acted as controls for these three combinations. Modified E.C.T. caused a rise in scram potassium, which, being highest at 3 minutes...

Effectiveness of sodium thiopentone, propofol, and etomidate as an ideal intravenous anesthetic agent for modified electroconvulsive therapy

INTRODUCTION Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well-established psychiatric treatment in which seizures are electrically induced in patients for therapeutic effects. ECT can produce severe disturbances in the cardiovascular system and a marked increase in cerebral blood flow and intracranial pressure. These cardiovascular changes may be altered using various anesthetic drugs. AIM AND OBJEC...

Etomidate for induction of anaesthesia at caesarean section: comparison with thiopentone.

Thirty mothers undergoing elective Caesarean section received thiopentone 3.5 mg kg-1 and 30 received etomidate 0.3 mg kg-1 for induction of anaesthesia. Subsequent management of anaesthesia was identical in both groups. Maternal to fetal base excess differences and the degree of biochemical correlation between mother and infant were more favourable following etomidate than following thiopenton...

Comparison of the effects of etomidate and thiopentone on intraocular pressure.

The effects of etomidate and thiopentone on intraocular pressure were studied in 50 patients of either sex undergoing routine non-ophthalmic surgery. Both drugs decreased intraocular pressure significantly. However, etomidate induced a significantly greater decrease in intraocular pressure than did thiopentone.
